dominican spanish is very different from castellano (spanish from spain). yes, the spanish language is basically the same everywhere but people (even native speakers) tend to have trouble understanding dominicans because of how fast they speak and because they tend to take letters out of words (usually the endings) and use a lot of slang. "How are you?" in regular Spanish: "Como estas tu?" "How are you?" in Dominican Spanish: "Como tu ta?" these videos explain dominicanisms quite well (funny too LoL!) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7Es9_AuPX4) and (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcvBdo5CGtY) ...also, dominicans will borrow a lot of words from english and just make them sound spanish...examples: guachiman (watchman) poloche (polo shirt). if you COULD go to the dominican republic, that would obviously be the best way to learn real dominican spanish....a good alternative would be to go to a dominican area/neighborhood in your state. Examples: Washington Heights, NY - Northern New Jersey - Boston, MA - Providence, RI - Miami, FL.
