Last revision date as posted on website - 22 October 2020
OVERVIEW |
The University of Michigan (U-M) privacy statement recognizes the value of privacy of the university community members and its guests.
This site-level privacy notice provides more specific information on how the Spanish Talker Intuition Regarding Rate of Speech (STIRRS) repository collects and processes your personal information.
SCOPE |
The notice applies to our practices for gathering and disseminating information related to the STIRRS repository (“we”, “us”, or “our”) and is meant to provide you an overview of our practices when collecting and processing personal information.
HOW WE COLLECT INFORMATION |
We collect personal information when you provide voluntary judgments as a native or advanced Spanish speaker about the speed at which Spanish dialects are spoken. These judgments are submitted directly in our repository.
WHAT TYPE OF INFORMATION WE COLLECT |
We collect the following personal information if you decide to submit a judgment:
- Your name or alias
- Your (valid) email address
- The dialect of Spanish that you speak
- Your judgment about how slowly or quickly Spanish dialects are spoken.
HOW THIS INFORMATION IS USED |
We use the personal information we collect to provide information about submissions and make them accessible to site visitors.
- We collect your name or username (alias) to credit you with the judgment. This also makes it easier for site visitors to distinguish between entries that might be similar.
- We collect your email address to quickly locate your judgment in case you request that it be modified or removed.
- We also require a valid email address so you can (choose whether to) receive a copy of your judgment for your own records and as a spam deterrent.
- We collect information about your Spanish dialect to help us understand what general trends might exist in aggregated judgments. We collect your judgment to add your intuition to future research about speech rate in varieties of Spanish.
WITH WHOM THIS INFORMATION IS SHARED |
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We may, however, share your personal information in limited circumstances, such as with university partners or external service providers that support our business activities.
Site visitors may download individual entries, judgment sets (as linked on the “Browse” page), and all site entries. These capabilities are intended for non-commercial purposes, i.e., academic research. The following information (when available) is attached to direct submission entries: name/alias of the person making the judgment, date accepted to STIRRS, text of the judgment, the judge’s origin (i.e., dialect), judgment categorization (i.e., dialect and speed), language of the judgment (i.e., English or Spanish).
We may also share your personal information when required by law, or when we believe sharing will help to protect the safety, property, or rights of the university, members of the university community, and university guests.
WHAT CHOICES YOU CAN MAKE ABOUT YOUR INFORMATION |
The STIRRS repository collects voluntary judgments submitted by site visitors. Visitors are not required to submit a judgment in order to fully access and utilize the repository. Submitters may opt out of providing this voluntary information at any time. Requests for content removal may be submitted to STIRRSrepo@umich.edu.
All STIRRS submissions can be viewed here. To amend or update your submission, you may submit a new judgment or contact us at STIRRSrepo@umich.edu using the email address provided at the time of submission.
HOW INFORMATION IS SECURED |
The University of Michigan recognizes the importance of maintaining the security of the information it collects and maintains, and we endeavor to protect information from unauthorized access and damage. The University of Michigan strives to ensure reasonable security measures are in place, including physical, administrative, and technical safeguards to protect your personal information.
